Diabetes: Reviews & Diabetic Eye Screening

All of our diabetic patients are invited for an annual diabetic check. This typically includes a blood test, urine test, and a foot check with one of our Health Care Advisors and can usually be done in one appointment. We will contact you when you are due, but should you feel you need to be seen sooner please contact the surgery.

You may also be invited for other services held elsewhere, such as diabetic eye screening. Diabetic eye screening is a test that looks for an eye condition called diabetic retinopathy that can be caused by diabetes, which if left untreated can cause sight loss. You will usually get a letter through the post inviting you for diabetic eye screening. The letter may give you a pre-booked appointment or tell you how to book the appointment yourself. You will usually be invited for diabetic eye screening when you’re diagnosed with diabetes, every year after, or every 2 years if your last 2 tests found no changes in your eyes. You can read more on the NHS website by clicking here. To find your closest eye screening service, click here.

For most of our patients, the two closest providers will be Birmingham, Solihull and Black Country DESP or Arden, Herefordshire and Worcestershire DESP which is provided by InHealth (see picture below).

The surgery unfortunately no longer has a dedicated Diabetes Nurse, however all of our Nurses and HCA’s are qualified to conduct a physical check and will involve a GP when necessary. Your blood test results are also reviewed by our diabetic leads, Dr Julie Harper and Shakeel Rashid. Diabetic checks are typically synchronised with your medication reviews, your results will help inform whether any changes to your medication is needed.

Contact the surgery 7 days after your blood test for your results and to arrange a telephone review if applicable.
